Christian Klay Winery to host Civil War Re-enactment

CHALK HILL – The Christian W. Klay Winery will host its first Civil War Re-enactment on Sept. 20-21. The 105th Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry, 3rd Regiment Infantry Maryland Volunteers, 5th Regiment Virginia Volunteer Infantry, 4th Virginia Artillery, 3rd Pennsylvania Cavalry and the 74th Infantry Regiment New York will participate in this event.

Between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. both days, visitors will have access to volunteer re-enactors in Union and Confederate campsites staging typical activities of the assault.

Soldiers dressed in authentic reproduction uniforms will be on hand to answer questions. Three branches of service – artillery, cavalry and infantry, will be portrayed, as well as medics.

“Bring every member of the family to witness this portrayal of Civil War life,” said Sharon Klay, winery owner. “The re-enactment gives spectators a snapshot of a pivotal time in our history that forever changed our nation.”

Scheduled events for the weekend include:

Sept. 20

– 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Camp & Sutler’s Village opens.

– 9 a.m., Dress parade, company drill and battalion drill.

– 10:30 a.m., Formation for battle.

– 11 a.m., Tactical.

– 2 p.m., Ladies tea.

– 2:30 p.m., Formation for battle.

– 3 p.m., Battle.

– 6 p.m., Authentic Civil War dinner and dance. There is a cost.

Advance reservations are required. Period dress is optional.

Sept. 21

– 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Camp & Sutler’s Village opens.

– 10 a.m., Rounder’s game (baseball) or Tug-of-War

– 12:45 p.m., Formation for battle.

– 1 p.m. Battle.

On both days, those attending can:

– Visit the Union or Confederate campsites at their leisure.

– Picnic areas will be available.

– Visit the Sutler’s Village to purchase authentic reproductive Civil War merchandise and apparel.

There is a daily admission fee for the re-enactment.

On Sept. 21, the winery also will be hosting its 10th annual Mountain Harvest Festival & Chili Cook-Off.

A donation at the gate benefits Uniontown Hospital, Touchstone Center for Crafts and the Raymond E. Malone Agricultural Scholarship Fund.

Those attending the Civil War Re-enactment will be asked for a donation if they wish to attend the chili cook-off.

The chili cook-off will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
