Soul Joel to bring stand-up comedy to Uniontown”Garden Groan,” a stand-up comedy show hosted by Soul Joel Richardson, will be presented at 9:30 p.m. today at Rookie’s, located at 6 Oliver Square off Route 51 in Uniontown.
The show will feature comedians Pat Breslin, Tony Maglio and Mike Bernardi. There is a cover charge. Richardson, 27, lives in New York, but he has local ties, and some of his Fayette County relatives and friends will be in the crowd at Rookie’s.
His father, Rick Richardson, and grandmother, Pat Richardson Koosher, still live in the area, along with several aunt and many friends.
Although Richardson was born in the North Hills, he said he loves Fayette County. He spent most of his summers and holidays in Fayette County with his relatives when was he was growing up.
Richardson works as a pharmaceuticals salesman by day who does comedy by night. He cut his teeth in comedy clubs in New York City and New Jersey from Comix to the Laugh Lounge and the New York Comedy Club, winning acclaim and awards as he went.
He has done two shows at Wagner College, Staten Island, N.Y., where he earned his bachelor’s degree in business and marketing, while on a wrestling scholarship . He also earned his master’s in management.
In 2002, he was named Mr. Wagner (College).
He’s even made appearances at the comedy clubs in eastern Pennsylvania.
Although he has been on the circuit for less than two years, he knows the ropes.
He has appeared in “open mic” performances and at “bringer shows” where performers bring their own audiences to get their time on stage.
He admits that being on the stage is growing on him.
The more appearances he makes, the more comfortable he feels.
