local The Pretty Good Theater Company will conduct auditions for the musical “Gypsy” from 6:30 to 9 p.m. June 16 and 7:30 to 9 p.m. June 17 on the second (mezzanine) floor of the Fayette Bank Building, 50 W. Main St., Uniontown. Take the elevator to the second floor and follow the signs. Those auditioning must sing at least 16 bars from a prepared upbeat vocal selection. An accompanist will be provided. Recorded accompaniments are not acceptable. Those auditioning must be prepared to dance. Each person will do a cold reading from the show’s script. Adult and teen roles are available. “Gypsy” is slated for performances on Aug. 14-17 at the Pretty Good Theater Company black box theater. A grants workshop will be held from 3 to 5:15 p.m. June 12 at Touchstone Center for Crafts in Farmington. Sponsored by the Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area (www.riversofsteel.com) and led by Julie Throckmorton-Meunier, cultural resources specialist, the workshop will focus on grants of interest to folk and traditional artists; cultural arts and heritage organizations; festival committees; traditional performing and visual arts groups; and historical societies. Grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Pennsylvania Humanities Council, Pennsylvania Heritage Parks Program, Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Carnegie Library’s Foundation Center will be discussed. Also, special guest Clara L. Pascoe, executive director of the Community Foundation of Fayette County, will discuss the PCA Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts – Project Stream Application. The Second Saturday Seminar for artists will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 14 at the Greensboro Log Cabin. This seminar is in two parts, beginning with a discussion of Giclee Prints by Peter West. He is a noted fine artist with a bachelor’s degree from the Tyler School of Art, Temple University, and a master’s degree from Ohio University. He was awarded the American Artist Achievement Award in acrylic painting and is the author of “Step-by-Step Airbrushing,” a Foster Art Publication. He owns and operates World West Galleries and Fine Art Printers in Washington, Pa. The other topic is Plenaire (painting outside), Painting on the Monongahela River (kids invited) with local artist Becky David leading this part of the seminar. There is a cost for the seminar. 64 Crayons at Jozart Studios, 333 Second St., California, invites local writers to submit short plays, from eight to 15 minutes running time, for possible production as part of the 2007 season at California Community Theatre. The plays will be read and judged by members of the 64 Crayons Writing Workshop. Final decision on production rests with the CCT board of directors. No more than two plays will be considered per playwright. A readers’ fee of $5 for one play or $8 for two will be charged, but playwrights will receive a share of the performance proceeds for any play produced by CCT. The fee will be waived if the author joins the writers’ workshop and participates in the production process. Cruisin’ in the Park VI, a car, truck and bike show, will take place on Aug. 24 at Shady Grove Park in Lemont Furnace. The first 200 will receive 11-inch stand-up dash plaques and gifts. D.J. The fourth annual St. Jospeh’s Roman Catholic Church classic car/truck/motorcycle show will be held July 20 rain or shine. Car show registration begins at 1 p.m. There will be a donation for show vehicles, and general admission is free. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 200 registered cars. A Pet Fair sponsored by the Perryopolis Parks and Recreation Authority, will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 21 in Sampey Park in Perryopolis. All pets (on leashes) and their families are invited to participate. There will be food, games and prizes for pets and children, a pet parade, talent contest, food, free samples, “pet”icures, photos and more.

Phantoms Cruisers Fifth Annual Car/Bike Show and Swap Meet will be held at the Fayette County Fairgrounds from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 6. Car show registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be a registration fee for each vehicle. Vendor spaces are available. Spectators enter free. Dash plaques and goodie bags will be awarded to the first 200 vehicles. D.J. Arnie Amber will present music. The event will feature door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, games, food by Courtyard Catering and The Ice Creamery, Chinese auction and Kids Chinese auction. A bicycle will be raffled. Trophies will be awarded to the top 60 vehicles plus 10 special awards. Included in the special awards are two four-foot trophies – one awarded for the best of show and one for the largest car club. The Addison Volunteer Fire Department in cooperation with the Confluence Lions Club will sponsor the first annual parade during the National Chainsaw Carving Festival at 7 p.m. June 13. The fire department is in need of sponsors to help with the purchasing of trophies and cash awards for the parade winners, including bands, twirlers, float entries and fire departments. Trophies and cash awards will cost about $800 to $1,000. Anyone who is interested in being a sponsor is asked to contact the Addison Volunteer Fire Department, Parade Committee, P.O. Fayette County will celebrate Independence Day with a backyard barbecue and an outdoor concert from 3 p.m. until dusk June 29 on the grounds of the Uniontown Mall. Paddle the Mon at Greensboro will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 15. The group will paddle about three miles on the Monongahela River upstream to old Lock 7, stopping to look at various river access opportunities in Greensboro and then head across the river to view the Friendship Hill National Historic Site’s riverfront. The group will then proceed to go downstream on the Mon, to paddle up Georges Creek in New Geneva and then return to the starting point. The tour guide will be Denny Tubbs, aquatic resources program specialist at the Southwest Region Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. Those participating are asked to bring binoculoars, cameras, polarized sunglasses for fish sightings, hat, boat shoes to get wet appropriate clothes for the weather and sunscreen. Water and snacks will be provided. The event will benefit the Nathanael Greene Historical Foundation. The REP, Point Park University’s Professional Theatre Company, is accepting equity principal auditions by appointment for the upcoming production of “Eastburn Avenue,” a new musical with lyrics and book by Marcus Stevens, music and music direction by Douglas Levine and directed by Scott Wise. Appointments will be accepted from noon to 4 p.m. and 5 to 8 p.m. Monday. Rehearsals begin Tuesday. “Eastburn Avenue” runs through June 15 at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.Catholic Charities of Greene County will present a musical variety show for the entire family: “The 2008 Summer Follie!” The event will be held at 7 p.m. June 13 at the First Presbyterian Church in Waynesburg. The 2008 Summer Follies will feature musical and vocal acts, which showcase the talents of local performers. Proceeds from the event benefit people who are served by Catholic Charities in Greene County with programs that include pregnancy and parenting support, counseling services, disaster assistance and emergency relief.
