Ask the Coach

Losing weight Hey, Coach! My question is about losing weight. What is a good way to lose say 20-30 pounds? The only way I know how to lose that much weight is by starving myself, which is what I used to do during wrestling season. I know that isn’t a good way to lose weight, and it can mess up your metabolism, but I don’t know anything else that works.

Signed……Wanna Be A Biggest Winner

Dear Wanna Be: The simple formula that works is to expend more calories than taken in. To be more specific, engage in a minimum of 60-90 minutes of moderate to intense cardio on most days of the week, along with reducing portion sizes, while eating a healthy and nutritional diet. Adding strength training to the mix is always a good idea. It doesn’t take much for some, while others really need to dig deep to discipline themselves to make this happen. You can do it. Good luck!

Bob Renninger

Many area senior citizens will remember Charles “Bob” Renninger as the person that operated a newsstand on the corner of Main and Beeson way back in the late ’50s and ’60s. Bob passed away at the beginning of the week and was buried on Wednesday morning. Those who knew him might say that he had a difficult life, although Bob probably never saw things that way. Bob contracted polio at the age of two and endured an amazing 29 surgeries. He walked with the aid of crutches, and even used those same crutches when someone once tried to rob him. Bob was incredibly intelligent and self-educated. When visiting with him from time to time at his apartment and in the nursing home, he was typically watching the History Channel. Invariably, Bob probably knew more about the topic of the day than the person using a script to narrate the show. Bob also was well-versed on the Bible, local and world events. He enjoyed reading the Herald-Standard, along with watching various shows on HSTV. He was never a complainer; never felt sorry for himself. He just went about his business the best way he could for almost 80 years. Bob was a determined fighter until the very end, overcoming odds that most of us would never have even dreamed of taking on. Bob gave the Coach’s older brother, Bill, his first job as a paperboy in the early ’60s. When Bill moved on to junior high, Bob also gave the Coach his first job, taking over for brother Bill. The Hutson family will be forever thankful to have known such a great man as Bob Renninger, a man who took on and conquered life like few others. Bob’s obituary may be appearing in today’s paper. Our hearts go out to the Renninger family for their loss.

Biggest Winner

Yes, the Biggest Winner has returned, and with good reason. When we last left Phil Michael at the end of January, he tipped the scales at just over 300 pounds.

He lost 80-plus pounds from January – September 2007; then got stuck in neutral for four months. Earlier this week, the Biggest Winner weighed in at 333 pounds, after having shot up to 351 at the end of March. Thus, it took the Biggest Winner eight months to lose 80 pounds, but only two months to put almost 50 back on.

With the end of school right around the corner, and Phil, knowing that he has to make some “permanent” lifestyle changes (nutritional habits), has made a vow to get back on track again.

Going back to Phil’s high school days, he graduated, weighing just a tad over 200. While the Biggest Winner talks about getting down to 250, he needs to just take things one day/meal at a time. Working out has not been the problem. Like a lot us, the Biggest Winner simply enjoys (a little too much) one of the greatest joys we know, and that’s eating.

It’s time to make your move, Biggest Winner!

Coach’s Comments: We should all have an extreme desire to live until we feel assured that the world is a little better place for having lived in it. Be safe, and thanks for making the Coach a part of your day!
