Ask the Coach

4 min read

Disliking someone Hey, Coach! I think I’m a pretty good person and I try to treat everyone with respect. I’m not going to give all of my reasons, but there are two people that I don’t like, and I don’t like being phony around them by trying to pretend that everything is OK.

They are not good people and are mean- spirited. I try to stay away from them and try to ignore their presence if we are in the same place.

Sometimes, each of them will try to talk to me, but I really don’t want anything to do with them.

How should I handle this?

Signed……Keep Your Distance

Ashley Thurby joins us again this week with her thoughts:

Dear Keep Your Distance:

Unfortunately, there are many people out there who aren’t always going to be nice to us. Some people can be really mean and disrespectful to others.

The best way to defeat these mean-spirited people is to kill them with kindness. Nothing affects them more than when their actions aren’t bringing you down.

You don’t have to pretend everything is OK, but honestly, don’t let them get to you. When you forgive them for whatever they’ve done to you, you begin to let go of the situation and start living your life.

You don’t have to be best friends with them. You don’t have to spend time together, but be the better person. Show them respect. Be kind to them. Maybe your positivity can even change their attitudes for the better.

Remember, it’s important to forgive — but you don’t have to forget.

Coach’s Response: In a perfect world, what more needs added to an incredible answer and attitude about life.

To be candid, Ash took the very highest road possible and topped any answer the Coach could have possibly given.

Liquids and working out

Hey, Coach! What is the best option for something to drink when working out? Is it water, or is it an energy drink of some sort?

Signed….H20

Dear H2O: Water is a great option in almost all instances. Our bodies depend on water to sustain certain reactions and to maintain an appropriate body temperature.

Depending on the length of the workout, a little bit of water before, during and after should suffice.

Drink as you feel a need, as well. For lengthy endurance workouts/events, sports drinks replace much needed electrolytes and are a good source to consider.

With that said, water is all that is needed 99 percent of the time.

Best workouts

We get asked a lot about what type of exercises are the best. Everyone is different, so the best answer we can give here is to choose activities that are enjoyed.

If you’ve never really worked out before and are just starting out, experiment by choosing a variety of activities, and see what works best for you.

Start out slowly, get a buddy or two, and don’t try to conquer Rome in a day, a week or even a month.

Fitness is a marathon; not a sprint. Don’t put pressure on yourself to make miracles happen overnight.

Think in terms of a lifetime program that, of course, can be changed and varied whenever the need is felt.

The main thing that we hope to offer here is that there is typically no wrong answer to working out.

Get started, and keep moving forward. It’ll be one of the best investments any of us can ever make.

Coach’s Comment: Inspiration is a guest that does not willingly visit the lazy.
