Summer reading program ends, but events still on schedule at library
All you’ve been hearing from me this summer are stories and information about the summer reading program we conducted. Well, I promise, this is the last of it. Even though the program is done, and all the summer rReading items have been packed away, the figures are in. There were 524 children enrolled, and they read a total of 4,002 books in eight weeks. We had children from 29 different townships, towns and cities with us in the program.
The winners of the drawing contest are: grades kindergaten through second, Kaitlyn Adams; grades three through five, Julie DiMatteo; and grades six and higher, Robert Rider.
Winner of the math contest was Lillian Nolan. The winner of Polly the Polar Bear was Chloe Androsik, and Morgan Eicher won Franklin the Turtle. Their photos will be on our Web page soon.
The board of directors and I wish to thank all who contributed to the success of the 2009 summer reading program. A list of donors is on the Web page on the children’s page under summer reading. We also want to thank the Friends of the Library.
So what are we going to do now that summer reading is over, you might ask? Well, first, we’re putting away all signs of it and preparing for the back-to-school rush. We’ll be cataloging our home schooling materials for easier tracking and locating purposes.
Our shelves will be “read” to put everything back in order. And shortly, we’ll be replacing older patron computers with new ones, plus adding three more to our computer center on the first floor for a total of 10 patron-use computers. Nearly every day, patrons must wait for their turn on a computer, so with the addition of three more, we hope to reduce the wait time. All this is possible through the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Friends of the Library will resume the regular monthly meetings in September. If you’ve been thinking of checking into this group, you’re welcome to attend the first meeting of the season here in the library at 1 p.m. Sept. 14 in the second floor meeting rooms. You’ll probably recognize a few faces, plus meet some new friends.
Don’t forget, too, the Scrabble Club meets at 6 p.m. the third Monday upstairs in the meeting rooms. Bring a friend the next time on Sept. 21.
For the Labor Day weekend, the library will be closed Sept. 5 and Sept. 7 so that the staff may enjoy the full weekend with their families. We hope that all of you will make special memories that last official weekend of summer.
Come see us in the library, attend a Friends’ meeting, and enjoy the Labor Day weekend.
“I’ve traveled the world twice over,
Met the famous; saints and sinners,
Poets and artists, kings and queens,
Old stars and hopeful beginners.
I’ve been where no one’s been before,
Learned secrets from writers and crooks,
All with one library ticket
To the wonderful world of books” – Anonymous
