Relay for Life a good time to reflect on healthy living
This weekend is the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. This annual fundraising event celebrates local survivors and remembers those we’ve lost. As people walk to raise money to find a cure to the many cancers that friends and family battle each year, keep in mind the best defense is prevention. Living a healthy lifestyle is the best way for you to prevent cancer .
First and foremost, stay away from tobacco. Quitting is not easy but the American Cancer Society and other community programs have resources to help you. Discuss quitting with your friends, family, and health care providers. Then can all support you.
Next be sure to eat healthy and stay active. Maintaining a healthy weight is associated with a lower risk for many cancers. A plant based diet with lots of fruits and veggies and less red meat has been show to help to reduce your risk in numerous studies. Don’t forget the physical activity either. Adults need at least 30 minutes per day and children at least 60!
The American Cancer Society also recommends that you practice Sun Safety. Cover up, put on a shirt, hat and sunglasses. Don’t forget the sunscreen either. These are simple steps that can go a long way in cancer prevention.
Most importantly become informed. There are many carcinogens or cancer causing agents being studied . These agents might even be common chemicals in your home, at work, or at your child’s school. They might be ingredients in your favorite products. Be sure to do the research and learn how you can make a difference in preventing cancer for yourself and your family.
Don’t forget to take time to learn your risk as well. Some types of cancer run in families. If someone in your family has cancer, be sure to discuss your risk with your health care provider. In addition, don’t forget to get regular check ups and recommended screenings. Early detection is your best protection.
So this weekend, celebrate hope for a cancer free world in your own way. Join those that are walking at the relay. Commit to quite smoking. Visit one of the many local farmer’s markets and eat better to help prevent cancer. Take a bike-ride on the Great Allegheny Passage. Use the resources available in our community. Take every step you can to become healthy in your hometown.
