Jodi Lynn Mrosko, granddaughter of Wendell and Betty Winkler of Uniontown, received her medical white coat recently from Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio. She is a daughter of Debra Winkler Mrosko of Eastlake, Ohio and Joseph Mrosko of Willoughby, Ohio. She is also a granddaughter of George and Judi Mrosko of Wickliffe, Ohio.

Jefferson Zarella of Masontown recently completed a course in the National Young Scholars Program at the Hun School of Princeton in Princeton, N.J. Zarella, a student at George J. Plava Elementary in the Albert Gallatin School District, studied medicine through the program, with an emphasis on leadership. He is a son of Jeff and Jan Zarella and the grandson of Garnet Huntley of Uniontown, and David Zarella and Susan Harding, both of Hillsville.

Garett Pyle and Nick Lambie recently participated in the Keystone Boys State held at Shippensburg University. The KBS program is sponsored by the American Legion. Post 51 in Uniontown sponsored Pyle and Lambie. The program is designed to promote education by providing an opportunity to experience the education process in Democracy. Participants are assigned as a resident to a named town where they run for offices on local and state levels through elections of their peers. Participants also are involved in fundraising with proceeds given to the American Legion to hlep offset future costs.

Patty Firestone of Connellsville and Ellen Cervone and Adam “Joe” Peroney, both of Belle Vernon, recently participated as part of a team of Westmoreland County Community College culinary arts and hospitality students who won a silver medal at the national Culinary Knowledge Bowl competition held by the American Culinary Federation (ACF) at its annual conference held in Gaylord, Texas.

The tournament tested the students’ knowledge in five categories, including baking, cooking, sanitation, nutrition and classical French cuisine techniques. The WCCC team won the ACF Northeast Region competition in March to qualify for the national championship.

Other members of the team were Heather Ferrara of Jeannette and Rebecca Hawk of Youngwood.

Sarah Erdely of Perryopolis, a senior business and marketing major at Juniata College, won $100 for submitting the winning design of a new logo for the Pennsylvania Collegiate Choral Association. The contest was open to any college or student to enter a design.

Erdely, who will be a senior this fall, is employed in the marketing office at Juniata and working in design. She was a 2008 graduate of Geibel Catholic High School.

Two local students of Saint Vincent College near Latrobe studied abroad this summer. Alex Tufano, a senior business finance major from Connellsville student in Italy.

Jessica McKetta, a junior undecided major from Acme, studied in Spain.
