Ask The Coach 12-11-11
Hey, Coach! The college football bowl system is supposed to have the two best teams in the national championship game, but LSU and Alabama have already played, and LSU proved to be the better team. Don’t you think it stupid or wrong that the same two teams are playing again? What if Alabama wins? They will be the national champ even though they will each have one loss and will have beaten each other. It just seems wrong to me. Signed……Pigskinner
Dear Pigskinner: We have had questions and comments in past years about this topic. The Coach is okay with LSU and Alabama playing for the national championship, but he doesn’t like how either team got there. LSU is obviously the best team at 13 – 0, but that doesn’t mean that someone couldn’t beat them in a four or eight team playoff. Alabama got there because people offered the smell taste, as they have said; because they think Alabama is the second best team; because they voted Alabama number two (based on perception); and because a computer said so. Duh? All other levels of football have a playoff to determine the national champion, and the biggest stage of all does not. Double duh! Could you imagine if basketball was done this way with only the top two teams in the poll playing for the national title? We see upsets and even major upsets happen all of the time. The so-called best team does not always win ON THE FIELD, where football championships should be determined. The BCS agreement cannot be changed for three more years, and then hopefully the powers to be will come to their senses. There would be so much more money involved with a playoff….and here the Coach thought it was always supposed to be about the money! Silly Coach!
Hall of Fame
The Fayette County Sports Hall of Fame had a recent marathon session to formulate the ballot for 2012. The committee reviewed all of the nominations, and there was information offered for each nomination. There were some lengthy discussions in some categories, and some of it was very spirited at times. There were some real tough decisions that needed to be made, and, of course, no one ever gets their way all of the time (majority rules), and some great, future Hall of Famers had to be left off the ballot for 2012, which happens every year. The ballots should be ready to go by the first of the year and will be mailed shortly thereafter. If you would like to become a member and be able to vote for the class of 2012, please visit the Web site at www.fayettecountysportshalloffame.com.
Coach’s Comment: A person who makes very few mistakes probably doesn’t go outside the box too often. Be safe, and thanks for making the Coach a part of your weekend.
