First Baptist presents live Nativity
The Sunday School of First Baptist Church of Fairchance, located at 17 N. Morgantown Road, is presenting a live Nativity from 6 to 8 p.m. today and Saturday on the front lawn.
The Nativity tells the story of Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem and will include the biblical characters and live animals.
Myrna Whitmarsh, superintendent of the Sunday school, said about 40 people from the church are participating in the program. The players work in shifts so no one is outside for long in the cold and everyone has an opportunity to participate.
“The shifts last about 20 minutes and we interchange people, so there’s always a Mary and a Joseph. Somebody is ready to step in when somebody steps out,” said Whitmarsh.
First Baptist brought back the live Nativity last year after a short absence.
“We do it as a service to the community. The community said they missed it,” Whitmarsh noted. “We get lots of visitors. We have live animals that people can pet. Last year, we had several grown men who were just in awe of the donkey. They said they had never seen a live donkey before.”
First Baptist also provides refreshments: cookies, soft drinks and a secret-recipe hot cocoa at no charge as part of this ministry.
Pastor Paul Silosky is pastor of the church. For more information, call 724-564-2080.
