music review
I’m starting the New Year off by looking back. Recently given a copy of “Doo-Wops & Hooligans” for Christmas, I was captivated by the versatility, talent and passion found masterfully sprinkled throughout the enchantingly chic compositions of Bruno Mars. The Hawaii-born singer-songwriter channels the pop magic of Michael Jackson, the laid-back vibe of Jack Johnson and the sexy sophistication of Adam Levine of Maroon 5. Not a bad combination of styles to possess while launching your debut album. I’ve heard Mars before, most notably on B.o.B’s hit single “Nothin’ on You,” but now Mars stands out as a first-rate writer and singer by delivering 10 arrangements displaying a refreshing dose of sensitivity and innocence.
Mars shows off his musical diversity by offering up a bewitching mixture of pop, reggae and R&B, highlighted with the hit “Just the Way You Are,” a charming love song that is as delectable as it is simplistic. “The Other Side” features Cee Lo Green and B.o.B., returning past vocal favors on a winsomely soulful melody that showcases Mars’ talents. For me, the real gem is the piano ballad “Talking to the Moon.” This heart-rending love letter gracefully serenades in the promise and passion of new love. If you missed out on “Doo Wops & Hooligans” like I did, do yourself a favor and get acquainted with this emerging star and start your New Year off with a delicious shot of pizzazz.
