Mount Rose Baptist Church to hold program honoring King
Mount Rose Baptist Church, located at 9 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Uniontown, will hold a program to honor the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The program will feature the youths of Mount Rose Baptist Church and Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Uniontown, who will offer some readings as well as singing and miming.
The Rev. Dewvaul Tracy from Bethel Baptist Church in Smithfield will speak on his experiences in the civil rights movement.
Mount Rose has hosted a service to commemorate the life of King for several years.
Last year, the service unveiled a sign as the city had recognized Grant Street as Martin Luther King Jr. Way. State Rep. Timothy Mahoney, D-South Union, attended that ceremony along with keynote speaker Dr. Norma Thomas of California University of Pa.
Tiffany Blaho, who is youth director and assistant superintendent of the Sunday school at Mount Rose, is serving as coordinator for the program. Sylvia Tarpley is the chairwoman.
Blaho believes it is important for the church to host these programs.
She said, “Because I didn’t grow up during the struggle, sometimes I don’t understand what people went through. Celebrating Dr. King’s life reminds me of the people who struggled before me so I can have the life I have today. It’s important for everyone to understand. People struggled. Some people gave their lives so we can live free today.”
The Rev. Brian K. McLee Sr. is pastor of Mount Rose.
