Poet to speak at Black History Month program

2 min read

Waynesburg University will host spoken-word poet Amena Brown Tuesday in honor of Black History Month.

Brown will perform in the Goodwin Performing Arts Center at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Admission is free and the public may attend.

Brown will also host an open-microphone night during her evening performance.

Invited to perform by Waynesburg University’s Black Student Union (BSU), Brown is known to be “regal and dramatic in her creative interpretation on stage and in her candid and expressive conversation one-on-one.”

“We chose to bring Brown to campus truly to expose Waynesburg University to something new,” said Whitney Proviano, president of the BSU.

“I would hope that Amena Brown offers a sense of relation through her performance – that there can be relation to one another through everyone’s individual expression of feelings.”

Proviano expressed that the BSU hopes Brown’s performance and poetry will demonstrate that expression and feeling are not bound by skin color, but are universal.

Brown’s words are said to “excite, ignite and inspire.”

The self-proclaimed “nonconformist” is known for lending her voice in an attempt to find “inspiration, truth and purpose.”

As the author of a chapbook and two spoken word CDs, Brown has been invited to perform and speak at many poetry and music events nationwide. She also hosts a regular open-microphone night in Atlanta, and works as a freelance journalist for multiple publications.
