Winter Demolition Derby raises money for Farmington Volunteer Fire Department
Skidding on a snowdrift and smashing your car into another isn’t usually a desired wintertime occurrence.
Usually.
The Farmington Speedway will host a Winter Demolition Derby on Sunday. Proceeds from the event benefit the Farmington Volunteer Fire Department.
All of the action begins at 2 p.m. with different derbies for a variety of vehicles. Spectators can see newer full-size cars as well as smaller front- and rear-wheel wreckers compete for glory on the snow-covered speedway. Many of the drivers participating also race in the summertime stock car races held at the track.
“Most of these guys have cars ready from previous races,” said Steve VanSickle, president of the volunteer firemen. “Last year, we had 15 cars for the first time (the race was) held. It’s a good time for all and something different to see. There’s nothing to do before the Pro Bowl, so why not come out and watch the races.”
The fire department, located on Route 40 just before Nemacolin Woodlands, holds other fundraisers during the year, including stock car races from May to August and the mountain area fair.
