New attractions to debut at fair midway
Drivers on Route 119 will be able to spot the Fayette County Fair a great distance away, thanks to one of the newest rides at the fair’s midway.
Towering above the skyline at the fairgrounds will be one of Powers Great American Midway’s newest attractions, the Skydiver.
According to Charlie Belknap, director of marketing, media and public relations for Powers Great American Midways, the Skydiver is no stranger to the midway.
“Some people who are in their 40s and 50s might remember it,” said Belknap.
The thrill ride debuted in 1965 at carnivals and midways across the country. The Skydiver, which looks very similar to a Ferris wheel, safely nestles guests into cars that travel 365 degrees, while the wheelhouse is vertical. During the ride, the car sits on an axis that allows the car to swing freely, which makes each ride a unique experience, according to the Flat Joint website, which specializes in fair and amusement archival photographs.
Even though the Skydiver has been in existence since the mid-1960s, Belknap said Powers Skydiver will be a new experience for everyone.
“We have put over 100,000 LED lights on the Skydiver,” he said. “This light package cost over $200,000. You will be able to see the lights from a great distance away.”
In addition to the Skydiver, Powers will debut a new fun house-type ride called Magic Maze.
The Magic Maze will beckon guests to discover its secrets as they tour a two-story fun house. The outside of the Magic Maze is trimmed by brightly colored flags and enchanting murals, according to a photo on Powers’ website.
Powers Midway, which has been a staple at the Fayette County Fair for more than 10 years, will bring its hallmark rides, games and refreshments to this year’s midway.
“We have been with them for a number of years. They are better than anyone else out there,” said Bill Jackson, Fayette County Fair Board president.
Belknap believes the way the company perceives itself has been a key to the company’s success.
“We treat our company like a traveling amusement park,” he said. “Our rides, food stands and games are spotless and clean.”
Through their variety of amusement options, Belknap said the midway will have something for everyone.
“Everyone enjoys the midway. A lot of younger people go for the rides, some people go for the games and other people like the food,” he said. “In today’s economy, it is one of the most affordable family outings there is today.”
Belknap said he sees the annual event as a way for families to reconnect.
“When they (patrons) go to the fair, not only is it a carnival, it is also educational. I think it is a great day of family fun,” he said.
The midway’s operation hours will be 6 to 11?p.m. Thursday, July 28, 3 to 11?p.m. other weekdays and 1 to 11?p.m. on weekends.
