Mount Rose Baptist hosts second annual youth summit

By Frances Borsodi Zajac 2 min read

Mount Rose Baptist Church, located at 9 Martin Luther King Way, Uniontown, is reaching out to youths this weekend.

The church will host its second annual youth summit, called “Reclaiming Our Heritage,” today and Saturday, and will celebrate the first anniversary of its youth choir on Sunday.

Tiffany Blaho, youth director, said she’s noticed that youths who find themselves in trouble are sometimes those who attend church. Officials hope to reach out to youths with the summit to reinforce proper behavior and morals.

Blaho said, “We want them to start being the person that other people want to emulate, to be the role models.”

She noted the name of the summit is based on Psalms 127:3, “Children are a heritage from the Lord.”

The summit begins at 5?p.m. today with mime and singing. At 6?p.m., there will be a panel discussion about what it means to be a Christian today and still be able to have fun. The panel will include the Rev. Gabriel Churn from Baltimore, Md., the Rev. Gilbert Kinsey from Philadelphia, the Rev. Gradis M. Eggleston from Coatesville, Pa., Minister Douglas Wright of Mount Ararat Baptist Church in Cardale and the Rev. Brandon Smith of Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church in Uniontown.

Afterward, Churn will give a keynote address.

The summit continues from 9?a.m. to 3?p.m. Saturday with workshops given by members of the panel as well as David Winfrey of Mount Olivet Baptist Church in Uniontown and Patricia Hall of Berean Seventh-day Adventist Church in Uniontown. Kinsey will give a keynote address.

The participants will then travel to Manor Lanes in Hopwood, where they will enjoy bowling, a disc jockey and a buffet from 3:30 to 7:30?p.m. Saturday.

The youth weekend continues at 3:30?p.m. Sunday with the observance of the first anniversary of Mount Rose’s youth choir. Eggleston will give the keynote address.

After a successful first year, the summit is now lowering the age for participation.

This year, youths ages 5 to 18 are eligible but Blaho said, “We won’t turn anyone away.”

The youths have been holding fundraisers since January for the summit, including hoagie sales, a fish dinner and a car wash. The church, however, will accept donations for the program.

To make a donation or for more information, call 724-208-9849. The Rev. Brian K. McLee Sr. is pastor.
