Sunday is Father’s Day!  This year the American Heart Association recommends that you Get Out and Get Active with your Dad!  Be creative and you can create memories that will last a lifetime. There are more options in southwestern Pennsylvania than you can imagine!

If you dad likes to play sports, join him for the day. If he golfs, hit the links for the afternoon.  There are over 100 golf courses in the 7 counties throughout the region. Try one this Sunday with your dad.  If you aren’t a pro on the golf course, suggest an afternoon at the driving range or sign the family up for a group lesson.  If dad likes baseball, there is room for everyone in a pick up game! If football is his fancy, head to one of the local parks for a game of touch football.

Of course, not all dads love “traditional” sports.  If your dad likes nature, try a bike ride along the Great Allegheny Passage. There are numerous bike rental shops along the trail if you don’t have one.  Better yet, plan a healthy picnic and head to Ohiopyle, Laurel Hill, or Laurel Ridge State Parks.  Grab a trail map from the visitor’s center and set out to find the perfect trail for your family.  Park Naturalists will even be hosting guided hikes that are perfect for families. At Ohiopyle, naturalists will host a waterfall hike at beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Jonathan Run trailhead.

If your dad likes art or architecture, plan a day exploring the grounds at Fallingwater or Kentuck Knob.  Does he like history? Head to one of the areas National Historic Sites like Friendship Hill or Fort Necessity.  Walk back in time and explore the miles of trails that were used by Albert Gallatin or even George Washington & his troops.

If your dad likes adventure, consider a white water rafting trip. Families with younger children can still get out on the water with a float trip.  Don’t stop with water adventures either.  There are ropes courses at Jumonville & Nemacolin Woodlands that will fill your need for adventure and help to create great family memories.

A tie or golf shirt can still make a good gift, but getting out and getting active with your dad will give him three gifts: Time with his family, Activity to benefit his health, and Memories to last a life time.  Whether you chose one of these activities or one of your own, take advantage of places and activities in your community that can help you (and your Dad)  to become healthy in your hometown!
