California Area students earn awards

Dani Zajicek and Ian Colbert, both seniors at California Area High School, received a scholar-athlete award recognition from the Intermediate Unit 1. The award is given each year to the top students from 12 local high schools based on their scholarship, leadership and athlete abilities. Colbert was honored for perfect attendance in the last four years, ranking number one in his senior class and four years of football. Zajicek was recognized for her scholarship to West Virginia University, academics and extra-curricular activity involvement.

Connellsville junior high reading team scores well

The Connellsville Junior High east Reading Competition Team recently competed in the Interscholastic Reading Competition at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, placing 11th against 48 other teams

The Westmoreland County Association of School Librarians in conjunction with Greensburg Salem Middle School sponsors the annual competition that requires the teams to answer questions about 40 books that the students have studied throughout the year. Team members included Alex Berger, Brandy Layman, Haley Lowry, Kasey McIntosh, Rachel Miller (team captain), Jared Mucha, Emily Reagan, Trudy Starr, Hailey Shannon, Hannah Surgent, Justine Waggel, and Brittanie Watson. The team was coached by English teacher Kristy Clements and librarian Holly Stuller.

The team will travel to the Fayette County Interscholastic Reading Competition May 12.

Mon Valley Career/Technical Center honored

The Mon Valley Career and Technical Center was recently honored by the state Department of Education for meeting adequate yearly progress goals for 2010. The school was awarded a certificate by Dr. Carolyn Dumaresq, deputy secretary of elementary and secondary education for the achievement during a symposium dinner March 4 at the Hershey Lodge and Convention Center.

Local students who are named to the dean’s list or are graduates will be listed in the main list submitted by the college or university. Individuals who attend higher learning institutions that do not submit lists to the Herald-Standard can submit the information including a name, hometown, school name, honor or reason for submission and semester of honor. Photos will no longer be printed with dean’s list or college graduate announcements.
