The Frank L. Melega Art Museum in Brownsville has announced the opening of a new exhibit of paintings and pastels by Patricia Mae Young titled “My Journey With Amy.” The exhibition will continue to May 7. The museum is located in the Historic Flatiron Building, 71 Market St., Brownsville.
The photography exhibit “The Working Press-Moments in Time” will be at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus for public viewing through April 29 and is free and open to the public. The exhibition, which will be on display in the Cultural Center in the Williams Building, showcases work by southwestern Pennsylvania press photographers. The exhibit was originally displayed at the Frank L. Melega Art Museum in Brownsville. The exhibit will be open for public viewing 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays.
Flat Iron Heritage Center Museum and the Frank Melega Art Museum on Market Street in Brownsville is open to the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, or by appointment. Training for new volunteers to help as tour guides and in the gift shop will be held Saturday and April 2 from 9:30 a.m. to noon in the Westmoreland County Historical Society’s Calvin E. Pollins Library, 362 Sand Hill Road, Greensburg. Historic Hanna’s Town, one of Westmoreland County’s most significant sites, attracts numerous school children, tourists and history buffs. The training will review historic background material, the basic tour format and discuss presentation techniques appropriate for the variety of visitors who come to the site. The “Celebrity Chef Cook-Off” to benefit the Fayette County Colon Cancer Network will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday at Anthony’s Lakeside Party Center. Fayette County Colon Cancer Network is a non-profit group with the sole purpose to educate and advocate the importance of colon cancer screenings and awareness. “Beyond: Visions of Planetary Landscapes,” a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition of images of space, is on display through April 12 in the Manderino Gallery at California University of Pennsylvania. The exhibit’s astonishing views of the solar system’s planets and their moons come primarily from NASA and European Space Agency missions. All SITES exhibitions at Cal U are open to the public. Carnegie Science Center will celebrate outer space with astronomical programming during “Space Out! Astronomy Weekend” on Saturday, and Sunday. The two-day event will feature dozens of tables and activities, including lunar displays, real moon rocks, NASA’s Educational Resource Center, Video Astronomy for Beginners and Astronomy Sketching. Make-and-take crafts include sundials, constellations, star clocks and Mars soil. The book, “Another Time, Another World: Pennsylvania Bituminous Coal, Coke and Communities,” by John Enman, Ph.D., is now available for sale at the Coal and Coke Heritage Center in the Library at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly campus. For information, call 724-430-4158, Monday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. This is the third in a series of books published by the center, each with a different focus. This book approaches the coal and coke era in western Pennsylvania primarily from a traditional research point of view. Dr. Enman spent 50 years intermittently researching and writing the book. On the cover of the book is a color print of burning coke ovens at night in Leisenring 2 taken by a local resident, The Rev. Edward C. Tajc, around 1950. In addition, the book contains materials related to the early iron industry of western Pennsylvania, a reprint of a 1907 news article “Uniontown’s Bunch of Millionaires,” and various other items related to this area.
