Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra Presents a Family Concert
“What Makes our Music American?”
The Westmoreland Symphony Orchestra (WSO) will present a Family Concert at the Greater Latrobe High School Auditorium at 2 p.m. May 5. This one-hour concert, titled “What Makes our Music American?” features some of the best-loved, home-grown American music. The program will be conducted by Daniel Meyer, WSO Artistic Director.
Part of this family event is an Instrument Petting Zoo, an opportunity for students to get “up close and personal” with a musical instrument, guided by members of the orchestra. The Petting Zoo takes place at 1:15 and 3 p.m.
The concert features American Salute by Gould, the Star-Spangled Banner by Smith, followed by America by Luck and Ives/Schuman’s Variations on America and Copland’s Variations on a Shaker Melody.
Esther Hull, soprano and Derry native, will sing Copland’s ‘Tis a Gift to be Simple. Guest pianist Sasha Voinov will play Tchaikovsky’s Dance of the Reed Pipes from the Nutcracker followed by a jazz version of the same piece. The concert closes with Duke Ellington’s Root Toot Tootie Toot, Hovhaness’ modern Volcano from Mt. St. Helen’s Symphony and John Philip Sousa’s Stars and Stripes Forever.
There is a fee to attend. For more information and tickets, call the symphony office at 724-837-1850 or go online to www.westmorelandsymphony.org. Tickets are also available at Volkwein’s Music Store in Latrobe.
