Mia Baker, a first-grade student at Friendship Hill Elementary School in the Albert Gallatin School District, was named a finalist in the Paralyzed Veterans of America’s eighth annual National Veterans Day Poster and Essay Contest.

Baker, a daughter of Brent and Anna Baker of Lake Lynn, entered the poster contest along with students from across the nation in recognition of Veterans Day 2011. Children were asked to creatively express their appreciation for America’s veterans using this year’s contest theme, “America’s Veterans: Our Heroes of the Past, Present, and Future.”

Her poster, featuring soldiers, an airplane and a bold U.S.A., is featured on the organization’s website at pva.org. PVA reported that more than 1,000 posters and essays were submitted from students across the country for the contest. PVA launched the contest as a way to creatively and actively involve America’s youth in the celebration of Veterans Day.

Mia Baker is a student in Lisa Haught’s class at the school in Point Marion.
