‘Slice of Broadway’ comes to Morgantown
Morgantown, a town known to bleed blue and gold, is about to get a visit from Ol’ Blue Eyes.
The new Broadway musical “Come Fly Away” — conceived, choreographed and directed by Tony Award-winner Twyla Tharp — will bring Frank Sinatra’s beloved classics to life at the WVU Creative Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
In collaboration with the Sinatra family and Frank Sinatra Enterprises, WVU Arts & Entertainment will present the performance, on its National tour, to students and community members alike in hopes of both entertaining and inspiring.
The stop will be a special one for the production’s musical director, Rob Cookman, who is an alum of the university.
“It’s pretty exciting to have him here and I’m sure he will revel in being able to deliver this performance on his home turf,” said David Ryan, public relations specialist at WVU Arts & Entertainment. “I think the audience will be pleased to know that this community had something to do with this wonderful performance. For current music majors and undergraduate students, it will be inspiring to see that this can happen if you work hard enough.”
“Come Fly Away” tells the story of four couples as they fall in and out of love during one song- and dance-filled evening at a crowded nightclub. Blending the legendary vocals of Frank Sinatra with a live on-stage big band and 14 dancers, “Come Fly Away” weaves an unparalleled hit parade of classics, including “Fly Me To The Moon,” “My Way” and “That’s Life,” into a soaring musical fantasy of romance and seduction.
“We try to bring in as many diverse performances as we can that we think the community will enjoy,” said Ryan. “It’s a chance to give them a culture experience they might not otherwise get. It’s great that we can all get a slice of Broadway here in Morgantown.”
The show’s score combines classic and newly discovered vocal performances from the Sinatra archives, along with Sinatra’s signature arrangements by Nelson Riddle, Billy May and Quincy Jones, among others, and brand new charts, for this fresh innovative musical.
Tickets vary depending on seat location and are on sale now at the Mountainlair and Creative Arts Center box offices. A limited number of tickets remain.
Tickets may also be purchased online at www.ticketmaster.com or by phone at 304-293-SHOW and 800-745-3000.
