Battle of bands needs aspiring musicians

Any bands interested in performing at the Fayette County Fair for a good cause should contact the Uniontown Area Y.

The Y’s teen advisory committee is accepting demo tapes from prospective musical groups to play at the battle of the bands competition July 29.

“This is a good chance for aspiring musicians in bands to play,” said Mike Georgiana, program director at the Y.

Four to five bands will be selected to perform for the honor of being “the next big thing.”

Demo tape submissions are due by May 26.

There will be a $1,000 grand prize that is good for studio and recording time from the presenting sponsor, Studio 41 of Uniontown.

The teen advisory committee hopes the battle of the bands competition will raise money toward the purchase of $25,000 of new playground equipment for the Y’s day care center. The group’s goal is to pay for the playground equipment before many of the board members graduate in the spring of 2013.

Sponsorships, raffles and people in the audience can choose their own winner by paying $1 per vote for the audience choice award winner.

“This event will help, but will not give us all the money that is needed,” said Andi Palmar, adult adviser for the teen advisory group.

“We are looking for corporate sponsors for the battle or donations toward the playground fund. We’re hoping this will be an event we can have every year,” Palmar added.
