Lori’s Look

By Lori Goodwin Scott digital Media Content Convergence Editor 2 min read

This is an exciting week here at HeraldStandard.com as our parent company, Calkins Media, is celebrating its 75th anniversary.

I’ve grown to love the history of this area, and I especially love seeing pictures of what the county looked like in the past. That goes the same for newspapers. I love looking back at old issues of the Morning Herald and Evening Standard and comparing them to today’s paper.

The company got its start in 1937 when Stanley Willis (S.W.) Calkins Sr. purchased controlling interest in the Daily News Standard newspaper, which merged with the Morning Herald in 1941 to create the Herald-Standard. And the rest is history. Check out our special section on the HeraldStandard.com website today for stories, past front pages, photos and more. See where and how this local newspaper company got its start.

If you’re out and about this weekend there are a few fun events going on. The band Martyr Kanin will be playing a show at the Christian W. Klay Winery from 5 to 8 p.m.

There will be an outdoor wine tasting, 50/50 and wine basket raffle, as well as cheese and fruit trays for sale. This event is hosted by the Deer Lake Ladies Auxiliary to benefit Children’s Playground.

Also, the Dunbar Community Fest is being held this Saturday. There will be a parade, 5K, pageant, historical displays, train rides, crafts and more.

If you have any past memories of this area, I would love to hear your stories and thoughts, and I would really love to see your old photos. Email me at lgoodwinscott@heraldstandard.com.
