Lecture offered

Allan Meltzer, economist and professor of political economy at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Waynesburg University’s Alumni Hall. His speech, titled “Why Capitalism?” is part of the Crosby Lecture Series. Admission is free.

Grant awarded

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded a $14.9 million grant to Westmoreland County Community College in support of the continuance and expansion of ShaleNET.

Established in 2010 by a WCCC-led consortium, ShaleNET is a workforce development program that seeks to provide community-based job training in the natural gas drilling and production industry.

U.S. Sen. Bob Casey urged the Department of Labor to the approve the grant after visiting WCCC in support of their application earlier this year.

WCCC operates a campus in Fayette County.
