Conferences set

The third parent-teacher conference day for students in the Uniontown Area School District will be held April 22 at all school buildings. There will be an early dismissal for all students, and lunches will be served prior to dismissal. Dismissal times for elementary students are: 12:05 p.m. Ben Franklin (first group), 12:30 p.m. Ben Franklin (second group), 12:05 p.m. Lafayette (first group), 12:30 p.m. Lafayette (second group), 12:15 p.m. Franklin, 12:15 p.m. Menallen, 12:30 p.m. Marclay and 12:30 p.m. Wharton. Dismissal times for secondary schools are: 12:15 p.m. A.J. McMullen, 11:20 a.m. Ben Franklin (grades 6-8), 11:20 a.m. Lafayette Middle, and 11:30 a.m. high school. The purpose of the parent-teacher conference is to encourage parents and guardians to visit with their son’s/daughter’s teachers to discuss concerns and problems.

Drug-free tweet contest set

Communities In Schools of Pennsylvania (CISPA), an affiliate of the nation’s largest dropout-prevention organization, will hold a tweet contest for high school students to promote CISPA’s alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention campaign My Voice PA. CISPA will give out $300 in prize money to winners of the contest, which will be held through April 30. In 140 characters or less (the limit of a tweet), students will be asked to tell why they choose to be drug free. To qualify, students must “follow” MyVoicePA and “retweet” at least one MyVoicePA tweet. The first-place winner of the contest will receive $150; second place, $100; third place, $50. CISPA will select winners based on creativity and originality. The contest is open to all Pennsylvania students ages 13 and older in grades eight through 12.

Thriller author Lawrence C. Connolly will be featured with Morgantown Poets at 7 p.m. Thursday April 18 at Monongalia Arts Center (MAC). An Open Mic follows immediately thereafter. Lawrence C. Connolly’s books include the novels Veins (2008) and Vipers (2010), Visions (2009), This Way to Egress (2010), and Voices (2011). He teaches writing at Sewickley Academy and serves twice a year as one of the residency writers at Seton Hill University’s graduate program in Writing Popular Fiction. Public parking is available near the MAC in the parking garage at the corner of Pleasant and Chestnut Streets and at the city lot behind 142 High Street.
