Holiday church tour offered in Fairchance
In the spirit of the season, the Community Alliance of Christian Women will host its fifth annual tour of Fairchance churches decorated for Advent and Christmas at 3 p.m. this Sunday.
Nan Chess explained the reason behind the free tour by saying, “We have these beautiful churches that are decorated to celebrate the birth of Jesus at Christmas. We’re individual churches but we’re all united in faith so why not come together? This shows the community is united.”
The tour begins at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 135 N. Morgantown St.; and continues with Ss. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church, 50 N. Morgantown St.; First Baptist Church, 17 N. Morgantown St.; Free Methodist Church, 53 S. Morgantown St.; First Presbyterian Church, 114 W. Church St.; and Trinity United Methodist Church, 27 N. Main St. The last stop is the Church of the Brethren, 17 Gallatin Ave., where light refreshments will be served.
Chess noted each church will offer a greeting and several will have singers and/or musicians that perform music of the season. Some churches will invite the public to sing Christmas carols. She explained a different church acts as host for the refreshments each year but added, “It’s a community effort shared by all of us.”
Last year’s tour attracted about 100 people who walked or drove the route.
“People can see what we have to offer and good Christian fellowship,” Chess said of the tour.
Founded five years ago, the Community Alliance of Christian Women is composed of members of churches throughout Fairchance.
Chess said, “The idea was to get the Christian women together to unify the community of Christian churches, do mission projects within our community and educate the surrounding area to the viable Christian community available to everyone.”
In addition to the Christmas church tour, the alliance organizes a Vacation Bible School for the community that is held each summer at the Light and Life Campgrounds, buys book bags for local students and donates money for local youths to purchase books at their school book fairs in addition to supporting a food pantry at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, assisting veterans and helping fire victims.
Said Chess, “Our motto is ‘Alone, little; together in Christ, much.”
