The following information details achievements in education earned by those in the Herald-Standard readership area.

Doctorate received

John F. Brothers II of Boston, Mass., formerly of Scottdale, successfully defended his dissertation recently and graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in bioinformatics from Boston University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering. His doctoral dissertation is entitled “Characterizing and Reassembling the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) Transcriptome Using RNA Sequencing.” Dr. Brothers is a son of John F. Brothers (Herald-Standard news photographer) of Connellsville and Jeanine Dull-Brothers of Latrobe. His grandparents are Elizabeth M. Brothers of Connellsville and the late Virgin W. Brothers; and Elmer and Ruth Dull of Royal Palm Beach, Fla., formerly of Scottdale. Brothers is a 2003 graduate of Southmoreland High School. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in bioinformatics in 2007 from Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester, N.Y. He is employed as a post-doctoral researchers at Boston University’s School of Medicine in the division of computational biomedicine.

Degree earned

James A. Whyel recently received a Bachelor of Science in materials science and engineering from the Inamori School of Engineering at Alfred University. Whyel is the son of James and Pamela Whyel of Markleysburg.
