Farrell strikes out 15 in Falcons’ 6-0 victory
CONNELLSVILLE — Trevor Farrell dominated in his last home appearance for Connellsville Monday afternoon. Farrell held Albert Gallatin to two hits and struck out 15 to help the Falcons to a 6-0 win in their final Section 2-AAAA game.
The Falcons offense collected eight hits with sophomore Brock Bonadio getting three hits from his leadoff spot. Bonadio and Cameron Bernhardt had doubles for the Falcons and Ty Henry had an RBI triple.
“Trevor threw and excellent game today. He was a strong at the end as he was at the beginning.” Connellsville’s Rob Orndorff said. “We had some nice defensive plays today. We were able to put pitching and defense together and get some timely hitting when we needed and we ran the bases well today.”
The Colonials (0-12, 2-16) threatened in the top of the second when Caleb Dempsey singled, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Farrell retired the next two batters on a short fly ball to right and a strikeout to strand the runner.
The Falcons (5-7, 7-7) picked up two runs in the bottom half of the inning. J.T. Stevenson drew a walk to start the inning and easily scored on Henry’s triple to center. Henry scored on Grant Witt’s sacrifice fly to left.
The Falcons increased their lead to 5-0 scoring three runs in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and nobody out, Henry hit a sacrifice fly to right driving in Grant Wortman.
Darrell Ross advanced from second to third on the play. He scored on Witt’s sacrifice fly to left. Stevenson who was at first base on a walk stole second and scored on Bonadio’s double to right.
The Colonials threatened to score again in the top of the fourth. Chris Uphold drew a walk and stole second. Jamal Palmer’s grounder to third was misplayed leaving runners at second and third. Farrell retired the next two batters on a strikeout and a fly ball to center, ending the threat.
“Today is pretty much how things have gone all season by not getting the hits when we needed them and defensive mistakes,” AG’s Shawn Chory said. “Connellsville was the better team today but my kids played as hard as they could. We’re going to try to end the season on a positive note, Tuesday in a double-header against Geibel Catholic.”
The Falcons added one more run in the bottom of the fourth. Bernhardt was hit by a pitch and stole second. With two-out Stevenson singled to drive in Bernhardt.
“I’ve seen a lot of improvement with this team since the beginning of the year. Especially our pitchers,” Orndorff said. “Coach Weibl has worked hard to get them to pound the strike zone and also let our catchers make some calls in certain situations. We’ve improved our discipline at the plate and situational hitting. I have definitely seen an improvement from what we started with.”
The Falcons will be on the road today for a non-section game at Baldwin.
