New cellphone application designed to combat terrorism
State police have launched a new smart phone application that will allow residents to report suspicious activity that may be linked to terrorism.
The See Something, Send Something “app” allows suspicious activity to be captured as a photo or written note and sent to the Pennsylvania Criminal Intelligence Center.
“This app provides concerned citizens with an effective communications and reporting tool,” State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said in a press release. “The See Something, Send Something mobile app, developed by My Mobile Witness, sends terrorism-related tips directly to PaCIC, where tips are evaluated by analysts and assigned for investigation as warranted.”
Police said that the application, which is free for iPhone and Android cellphone users, includes information on what to look for and when to report suspicious activity, along with how to receive alerts.
“We are excited about the announcement of this app for a number of different reasons,” state police Trooper Stefani Plume, public relations officer in Uniontown, said Monday.
“This app not only allows the public to report suspicious activity that might be linked to terrorism, but it will also act as a deterrent within our communities. We want people to be made aware of the app, download it and use it if needed. We also want people to know that it exists because we do want to deter any terroristic activity in our area. We have a number of large facilities like power plants, airports, resorts and sporting venues that could become possible targets and our goal is to do as much as we can proactively,” she said.
In addition to the new mobile app, residents can call the State Police Terrorism Tip Line at 1-888-292-1919 or email tips@pa.gov to report suspicious individuals or activity.
