California University of Pennsylvania will mark Constitution Day by exploring the trademark leadership of Gen. Colin Powell, a decorated military leader and the first African-American to serve as chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as Secretary of State.

The free Constitution Day presentation “Colin Powell: An International Statesman” begins at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Eberly Hall, Room 110. The public may attend.

Dr. Michael Hummel, professor of leadership and security studies at Cal U, will deliver the keynote address. His talk, “Colin Powell: Trademark Leadership,” will review Powell’s military and political careers, his philosophy of leadership, and his role as founder of America’s Promise Alliance, a nationwide partnership focusing on the well-being of young people in the United States.

“We chose this year’s topic for Constitution Day to coordinate with Gen. Powell’s upcoming visit to our campus,” explains Dr. Melanie Blumberg, campus director for the American Democracy Project at Cal U. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for our students, and for the community, to learn more about this groundbreaking leader. We hope that Dr. Hummel’s talk will inspire them to attend Gen. Powell’s address later in the week.”

Powell will be the featured speaker Thursday when California University hosts the 2013 Pittsburgh Diversity and Leadership Conference in the Cal U Convocation Center.
