California netters take two from Lady Jayhawks

The California girls tennis team completed a postponed match and then swept through the regularly-scheduled Section 1-AA match against Jeannette, 5-0, for a pair of victories Monday afternoon.

Elizabeth Wohar won 6-3, 6-1, at No. 1 singles, Crystal Rook lost only two games at No. 2 singles, and Danielle Koehler completed the sweep of singles with a 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles.

Nina Victoria and Pang Sawangteerawat, at No. 1 doubles, and Courtney Tichnor and Rachel Wilkinson, at No. 2 doubles, both won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

The two teams completed a match postponed on Aug. 27 because of rain with the Lady Trojans putting the finishing touches on a 4-1 win.

Wohar and Victoria didn’t lose a game in their straight-sets victory, nor did Wilkinson and Devan Altman at No. 1 doubles. Lacey Koster and Josie Tarquinio won their first set at No. 2 doubles, 6-0, and needed a tiebreaker for the match, 7-6 (0).

Mount Pleasant 4, Brownsville 1 — Mackenzie Swords saved the Lady Falcons from the shutout as visiting Mount Pleasant returned home from Brownsville with a 4-1 victory in Section 1-AA action.

The Lady Vikings remain near the top of the standings with a 10-2 section record. Brownsville slips to 3-9 in the section and 4-9 overall.

Swords defeated Carmen Kubasky at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1.

The Lady Vikings’ Taylor Bradley didn’t drop a game for a straight-sets victory at No. 1 singles over Sari Yuhas. Paige Hertzog was taken to a first set tiebreaker, 7-6 (4), but won the second set, 6-3, to defeat the Lady Falcons’ Angie Braznok.

Brooke Lazur and Kailee Gamrat and Kayla Queer and Madi Kromer won their doubles matches in straight sets to complete the victory.

Mount Pleasant next hosts Brownsville and the remaining Section 1-AA squads Wednesday in the section doubles tournament.

Boys golf

Carmichaels 191, Brownsville 253 — Justin Newman fired a 1-under 36 at Carmichaels Golf Club to lead Carmichaels to a 191-253 Section 8-AA victory over Brownsville.

Liam Shea (37), Brandon Wamsley (38), and Jacob Wamsley (39) also broke 40 on the Par-37 front nine. Phil Mikalik closed out the scoring with a 41, while Jordan Bogucki’s 42 wasn’t used for the Mikes (l5-6, 6-7).

Leading the Falcons (0-8, 0-8) to their lowest score at home was Dan Mullen with a 46. Mike Adamson finished with a 48. Zane McShane shot a 49, and Brad Britvich had a 52. Carl Dellapenna’s 58 closed the scoring.

Girls golf

Southmoreland 221, Kittanning 253 — Lindsey Pritts carded a 12-over 48 to lead the Southmoreland girls golf team to a Section 1-AA victory over visiting Kittanning at Timber Ridge Golf Course.

Kelsey Shirer shot a 54, and Nadine Matthews finished with a 58. Cassie Bushell’s 61 rounded out the scoring for the Lady Scots (5-2).

Morgan Joseph and Kayly Lazaroff both shot 61 for Kittanning.

Girls volleyball

Brownsville 3, Belle Vernon 0 — The Brownsville girls volleyball team took a break from section action and returned home with a road victory over Belle Vernon.

The Lady Falcons (2-5, 2-2) swept to victory by the scores 25-15, 25-16, 25-13.

Brownsville’s Alie Seto had a nice all-around effort with 10 service points, six aces and three kills. Skylar Wellington had 11 service points, and Maris Seto finished with seven kills, and Tori Dubos added six kills. Abby Stagesin led with 16 assists.

Jefferson-Morgan 3, Washington 0 — The Jefferson-Morgan girls volleyball team swept past visiting Washington, 3-0, for a non-section victory Monday night.

The Lady Rockets won by the scores 25-20, 25-14, 25-20.

Morgan Kendall had a team-high 11 service points. Kirsten Stoneking led the defense with seven digs. Morgan Simkovic and Jamie Lawrence both had four kills.

Jefferson-Morgan (5-2) returns to section action tonight at Carmichaels.

Mapletown 3, Beth-Center 2 — Beth-Center rallied to tie the match at 2-sets all, but Mapletown won the fifth set, 15-9, for a non-section volleyball victory Monday night.

The Lady Maples (2-5) won the first two sets, 25-20, 25-13, but the Lady Bulldogs forced a fifth set by winning the next two, 25-19, 25-20.

Abby Shipley led Mapletown with 18 service points and seven aces. Rachael Bochtan had 10 kills and nine blocks. Amelia Foreman added 10 service points and three aces, and Madison Bogden had nine service points.

Girls soccer

Kiski Area 5, Connellsville 1 — Ashton Grimm scored the game-opening goal Monday night, but it was all Kiski Area after that with the visiting Lady Cavaliers defeating Connellsville in Section 1-AAA action.

Grimm scored off a Caitlin Fess assist at 31:27 of the first half, but Nicole Cadwell tied it two minutes later and Allie Lohr scored the eventual game-winning goal at 15:33.

Stacey Sikora, Jamie Frank and Britney Dalla, on a penalty kick, scored in the second half.

Connellsville goalie Marian Chearney made 11 saves. The Lady Cavaliers’ Alexis Tracula turned aside eight shots.

Connellsville (0-6, 4-6) starts the second half of the schedule Wednesday when it hosts Hempfield.

Boys soccer

Laurel Highlands 10, Uniontown 0 — Matt Weiss, Aaron Hanzes, Drew DeBerry and Colby Tarr all netted two goals as Laurel Highlands defeated rival Uniontown in Section 6-AA action.

Hanzes scored the first goals, and Weiss netted the last goal of the first half and first of the second half. Then, DeBerry scored his two goals.

Tyler Brown and Timmy Lucas also scored for the Mustangs (6-1, 8-2).

Jake Mansberry made four saves and Alex Mears turned aside one shot to preserve the shutout.

Laurel Highlands travels to Brownsville tonight.
