Jefferson-Morgan School Board approves ‘The Future is Mine’ program participation

JEFFERSON — Directors of the Jefferson-Morgan School Board voted in favor Monday for the district’s participation in “The Future is Mine” program, sponsored by the Consortium for Public Education.

Superintendent Donna Furnier described the program as a “ready for the real world initiative” that encourages students to find their passion and pursue their career-oriented dreams in an informed manner by participating in after school individual, group and peer-to-peer projects designed to build leadership skills.

The students also will have the opportunity to meet with other students participating in the program, Furnier said. About 30 other schools in southwestern Pennsylvania participate in the program.

The district plans to use the program to develop a mentor, buddy-buddy system between the high school and elementary school students, she said.

The consortium covers the cost of participating in the program, and a teacher named as a sponsor will receive a stipend for running the program, she added.

At the meeting, school officials announced that students entering grade 7 can attend an orientation beginning at 9 a.m. Friday in the school cafeteria.

New seventh-graders will be able to obtain their class schedules, meet their new teachers, and familiarize themselves with the layout of their new school, said Jefferson-Morgan High School Principal Bart Donley.

“It will be nice to bring the next wave of the new Rockets into the building,” Donley said.

The district in general is gearing up for the new school year, Furnier said, with the first day of class set for Monday, Aug. 25.
