The Education Council of the Fayette Chamber of Commerce has honored Jaira Maya Wells of Uniontown, a junior at Fayette County Career and Technical Institute, as a student of the month for November.
A daughter of De’Loleik and Tina Wells, she plans to attend Howard University or Penn State University to study electrical engineering and English with the goal of becoming an electrical engineer.
Wells is a waitress at Pizza Hut, volunteers at the East End United Community Center as a mentor and tutor, and earned the STEM Star Student Award for Engineering.
Her extracurricular activities include Upward Bound, Making a Change, student council, Students Against Destructive Decisions, track, basketball, Business and Professional Women’s Association and district president and regional vice president of Skills USA.
Elected by their schools based on academic achievement, extra curricular activities and citizenship, students of the month are honored by the chamber’s education council and will be presented a recognition certificate at the students of the month luncheon in April 2015.
