Brownsville SB hires attorney to investigate claims against employee
BROWNSVILLE — Brownsville Area School Board approved Thursday the retention of a law firm to investigate allegations that have been lodged against a district employee.
The board approved hiring Peacock Keller of Washington.
During board meetings in October and November, parents alleged that a district employee read the names and grades of some students in front of their peers, causing embarrassment to some students.
Federal law prohibits school officials from disclosing personal information about students, including grades.
The board has not revealed the employee’s name. During the Oct. 17 meeting, board President R.W. “Rocky” Brashear said revealing the name could expose the board to a potential lawsuit from that employee.
He said until an investigation into the matter has been conducted, it would be improper to reveal the employee’s name because it would deprive the person of due process.
The board approved retaining a firm to investigate the matter in November.
According to the Peacock Keller website, the law firm is comprised of attorneys with diverse areas of concentration.
The law firm advises school districts throughout western Pennsylvania on all legal matters relating to public education.
Peacock Keller serves as solicitor for five school districts in Washington and Greene counties and represents other school districts on all educational-related issues, including student disciplinary matters, labor and employment issues, special education matters and insurance defense claims.
