Local students recognized as community service leaders

Sabrina McMillen

Several students from local school districts, universities and institutes have been selected as the 2014 Fayette County Community Service All Stars.

Students were nominated by their respective schools based on their community involvement over their schooling careers. There are nine students receiving the $500 scholarship award and recognition in the 11th year of the scholarship program. Students were also required to write an essay and meet at 3.25 minimum grade point average requirement.

Kathryn Bailey

The Connellsville Area School District selected Kathryn Bailey as their awardee. Included in her list of community service experiences are volunteering at the Armory Club in Connellsville, fundraising for the National Honor Society and ROTC program and participating in the Patriot Club.

A daughter of William and Kelly Bailey, she said her life goals are to be a forensic psychologist in the United States Marine Corps. She plans to attend Robert Morris University to study forensic psychology and has recently left for boot camp.

Caitlyn Brown

Not far away, Caitlyn Brown was selected by the Frazier Area School District. Some of Brown’s community service experiences include helping with the Perryopolis Pioneer Days, singing and volunteering at the First Christian Church of Fayette City and serving as a team captain in for Relay for Life.

A daughter of Kevin and Cindy Brown, she is ranked 9th in her class and is undecided on what she wants to pursue in the future, though she says she wants to perform to the best of her abilities to become successful in the future.

Andrew Colebank

On the other side of the county, the Albert Gallatin Area School District chose Andrew Colebank. His community service experiences include being an Eagle Scout in Masontown Troop 654 where he participated in several Flag Day ceremonies and led numerous service and fellowship weekends. He also served as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army.

A son of Thomas and Kathleen Colebank, he plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh to pursue a bachelor of science degree in neuroscience and chemistry and obtain a minor in religious studies.

Rachael Franks

On the higher education circuit, the Penn State Fayette Eberly Campus has selected Rachael Franks as their awardee.

Majoring in human development and family studies, Franks wants to be a “home-town” hero, saying she wants “to make a long-lasting meaningful connection with Fayette County’s youth, letting them know they are not alone.”

Franks is a daughter of Frances and David Franks and wishes to become a licensed social worker in the fall.

Bonnie Henry

The Pennsylvania Institute of Health and Technology has chosen Bonnie Henry as a leader in community service. Her list of community service experiences includes the Salvation Army, American Heart Association, Teddy Bear Care Fund and TOPS Organization. Henry has also participated and aided in many walks for cures and it active in the student event club.

A daughter of Gladys Henry and fiance of Adam Benya of Uniontown, she plans to graduate in October with an associate’s degree in specialized business, medical office administration.

Brandon Kushnar

In Connellsville, Geibel Catholic Junior-Senior High School selected Brandon Kushnar. Some of his community service experiences include volunteering at the high school, sporting events, his church and Habitat for Humanity.

A son of David and Lenora Kushnar, he plans to attend Seton Hill University to study forensic science. Kushnar said he plans to get a well-paying job, succeed in academics and continue to serve his community.

Sabrina McMillen

As for the Laurel Highlands School District, they have selected Sabrina McMillen as their awardee. Her list of community service involvement includes the Children’s Institute of Pittsburgh, War & Veterans, Inc., Operation Military Kids, Stars for our Troops and numerous Red Cross blood drives. McMillen also volunteers at Fort Necessity, Friendship Hill and the State Theatre in Uniontown.

McMillen plans to attend Penn State University Park to pursue history and become a museum curator.

Samantha Quinn

The Uniontown Area School District has chosen Samantha Quinn as their awardee. Her community service experience includes teaching Life Skills classes at the Uniontown High School, volunteering with United Way, the State Theater, the Special Olympics and St. John Evangelist Church.

A daughter of Gerald and Susan Quin, she plans to attend Penn State Fayette to pursue English to be a write or to become a theater stylist.

Christian Sesek

On the west end of the county, the Brownsville Area School District has selected Christian Sesek as their awardee. Included in his list of community service experiences are the Historic Catholic Church or St. Peter, the Brownsville Area Revitalization Corporation and the Jefferson Awards for Students in Action Initiative.

A son of Paul and Stephanie Sesek, he plans to attend Duquesne University or The Catholic University of America to pursue vocal performance or political science.
