Uniontown teen sentenced for corruption of a minor
A Uniontown teen who was convicted of corruption of a minor was sentenced to up to 23 months in jail in Fayette County Court on Friday.
Michael Monroe, 19, was tried in March on charges of rape, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, aggravated indecent assault and simple assault as well as corruption of a minor, but the jurors did not believe Monroe forced himself on the 17-year-old victim, who testified she had been friends with Monroe since childhood.
The Herald-Standard does not identify the victims of sexual crimes.
Senior Judge Gerald R. Solomon ordered Monroe to serve nine to 23 months in jail. Monroe was previously ordered to undergo an evaluation by the state Sexual Offender Assessment Board as part of the presentence investigation, and was found not to be a sexually violent predator.
Because the corruption of minors charge Monroe was convicted of is specifically of a sexual nature and therefore a Tier 1 Megan’s Law offense, he will be required to register as a sex offender for 15 years, reporting annually.
At trial, witnesses testified the victim had a disagreement with her boyfriend March 8, 2013, and that when her boyfriend left the house to go to a party, Monroe joined her in an upstairs bedroom to comfort her, which led to the two having sex.
The victim testified the sex was not consensual, but Monroe, who testified this was not the first time they were intimate, said she asked him to stay with her in the bedroom because she didn’t want to be alone. Monroe testified he specifically asked her if she wanted to have sex and she said yes.
