Safer sugar sources

By Tara Rack-Amber trackamber@heraldstandard.Com 2 min read

While the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and doctors are warning about the types of sugars to avoid, there are some safe alternatives available. According to Hungry for a Change’s website, hungryforchange.tv, here is a list of “sugar alternatives” with some nutritional claims made by the website.

n Coconut Palm Sugar: This type of sweetener is also good for diabetics because of its low glycemic index which means that the body will not experience a sugar rush with a crash later on.

n Stevia: This sugar alternative is calorie free and is rated low on the glycemic index which means it is good for diabetics and people counting their calories.

n Raw honey: The website encourages people to purchase raw honey instead of processed honey because the health benefits are removed during the processing.

n Molasses: Hungry for Change says, “Blackstrap molasses is perhaps the most beneficial and is a good source of iron and calcium.”

n Artichoke Syrup: The website says that research has been conducted that has found this type of sweetener to help improve gastrointestinal health and calcium absorption.

n Lucuma Powder: According to Hungry for Change, this sweetener is a healthy alternative for diabetics and is a good sweetener for breastfeeding women.
