Women’s golf tees off fall season
The Waynesburg women’s golf team saw major improvements in its match Tuesday at the Grove City Invitational, according to one Waynesburg coach.
The Jackets turned around a last place finish at the Westminster Invitational over the weekend by making movements forward, while pleasing head coach Sam Jones.
“Our golf day was awesome,” said Jones. “I was really excited about how it went. We showed a ton of improvement from Saturday and that was exciting to be a part of.”
The women’s team dropped 100 strokes off its score from Saturday. Senior Kelly Mehal thought her game was better in the second match.
“I definitely think I did a lot better than the first tournament,” said Mehal. “My drives and fairway shots were better.”
Mehal paced the team with a 106 for the day.
Jones said the drop in scores was a common theme for all the girls, and that was due to more experience for many of the girls.
“Last time we played, three of our four golfers never played in a golf tournament before at any level,” said Jones.
Mehal was followed by Kristen Miller, who finished with a 168. Rebecca Kerr came in third place on the squad, with a 168; and Andrea Losko finished, shooting a score of 234.
Mehal believes this team will make strides as the season moves on, despite the lack of playing experience.
“I definitely see our strengths getting better,” said Mehal. “We have a lot of girls that stepped up to the plate because we were short on girls. I’m glad the girls joined and decided to take a risk and try golfing because a lot of them have not golfed before.”
The Waynesburg golf team will look to improve even more when they travel to Hermitage, Pennsylvania, to compete in the Thiel College Invitational at 1 p.m. Saturday.
