The Brownsville girls soccer team got a boost, winning its first game of the season, 4-0, on Wednesday at Uniontown in Section 4-AA action.

The Lady Raiders and Lady Falcons battled back and forth for most of the first half. The ball saw a lot of action on both halves of the field.

Lady Falcons junior Peyton Jacobs scored the first goal of the game with 21:03 left in the first half.

The two teams went back to fighting for control of the ball through the next 20 minutes until the break at halftime, interrupted only by an ankle injury causing Brownsville senior Jenna Shumar to be carried off the field.

Shumar left the stadium on crutches before halftime with a swollen ankle to get x-rays.

“We don’t know what happened exactly. She’s really one of my leaders,” Brownsville head coach Shane Gottschalk said, “She actually wanted to go back into the game.”

Brownsville really stepped up after halftime, scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes.

Senior Alexa Sharpe scored just under five minutes into the second half at 35:54 followed by a second goal from Jacobs not even two minutes later at 34:47, taking the score to 3-0 for the Lady Falcons.

Brownsville freshman Emma Kovseck scored the final goal with 15:06 left in the game, setting the final score.

“We played Brownsville in the coach’s tournament and we beat them. I thought we’d do alright against them (tonight), but the girls played flat tonight and Brownsville beat us to the ball,” Uniontown head coach Greg Peck said. “We have some things to work on and we’ll try to get better.”

The Lady Falcons managed 28 shots on goal in the game, while the Lady Raiders had just seven.

“With all the losses this season I think it was a little discouraging for them (the team). This was a good boost for moral,” Gottschalk said.

Brownsville senior goalkeeper Emmory Tardivo had seven saves for the night, while Uniontown senior Leighlyn Guthrie made 24 saves.

“She played a really good game, she made some really great saves tonight,” Peck said of Guthrie.

Uniontown (0-5, 1-5-1) hosts Belle Vernon in a Section 4-AA game on Saturday at 10 a.m., while Brownsville (1-5, 1-6-1) travels to Ringgold at 7:30 p.m. on Friday also in section play.
