Mount Pleasant netters slip by Lady Falcons, 3-2
The first doubles was the turning match in Monday’s Mount Pleasant-Brownsville Section 1-AA match, and the Lady Vikings’ Kayla Queer and Mikayla Krozel rallied from a match point down to win the tiebreaker and lift Mount Pleasant into the playoffs with a 3-2 win.
Queer and Krozell won the first set, 7-5, but the Lady Falcons’ Peyton Jacobs and Becca Bochna rallied to tie the first doubles match by winning the second set, 6-4.
Brownsville held a 7-6 advantage in the third set tiebreaker, but Queer and Krozel held serve and then went on to win two of the next three points for the key victory.
Brownsville’s Angie Braznok defeated Brooke Lazur, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles, but the Lady Vikings won the remaining two singles matches.
Kailee Gamrat defeated Mackenzie Swords, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, and Madie Kromer beat Lauren Zelner, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles.
The No. 3 doubles match was tied at a set apiece when Queer and Krozel secured the victory, so Tiffany Markovitch, who moved from her usual singles spot, and Kristie Bulla won a 7-2 tiebreaker.
Brownsville (5-4, 6-4) closes section action Monday against Thomas Jefferson. Mount Pleasant sits in fourth place, the final playoff berth, at 7-2.
The section doubles tournament will be held today at Baldwin with top three teams advancing to the WPIAL championship next week.
Golf
Geibel Catholic had the advantage at the backend of the lineup Monday afternoon as the Gators edged visiting Beth-Center, 246-248, for a non-section win at Pleasant Valley Country Club.
Beth-Center slips to 3-8 overall, while Geibel improves to 5-8.
Anthony Lovat was the low man for the Gators with a 9-over 46. Vinny Delsignore shot a 47 and Steve Conko finished with a 50. Joel Lazor (51) and Bailey Miller (52) rounded out the scoring.
The Bulldogs’ Tyler Kuntz, who will play in the WPIAL Class AA Individual Golf Championship on Wednesday, was the medalist with a 3-over 40. Ryan Beyer finished with a 45 and Tyler Ross shot a 50. Will Skariot (56) and Tim Terhorst (57) also counted in the final score.

The Connellsville and Southmoreland boys golf teams took a break from section play Monday afternoon as the Scotties defeated the Falcons, 220-279, at Timber Ridge Golf Course.
Southmoreland improves to 9-3 overall, while Connellsville slips to 0-9.
The Scotties’ Josh Redding was medalist with a 4-over 40. Phil Lockhart, who will play in the WPIAL Class AA Individual Golf Championship on Wednesday, and Corey Shafer both shot 44. Brock Grabiak, Zach Stefan and Noah House all finished with 46.
Alexis Kaper was the low golfer for the Falcons with a 53. Seth Bruner and Harvey Hayden both shot 55, and Brock Firestone and Molly Bauer both finished with 58.

The combination of Jordan Bogucki and Liam Shea provided a strong 1-2 punch for Carmichaels Monday afternoon in the Mikes’ 211-235 non-section victory against visiting Albert Gallatin at Carmichaels Golf Club.
Carmichaels improves to 12-1 overall, while the Colonials slips to 5-10 overall.
Jordan Bogucki was the medalist with an even-par 37. Shea was a stroke off his pace. Jacob Wamsley finished with a 41, Chris McAfee had a 44, and Josh Bogucki closed out the scoring with a 51.
Tanner Kutek was the low man for the Colonials with a 5-over 42. Adam Burke (45), Seth Goletz (47), Alex Arnold (49), and Tom Victor (52) rounded out the scoring for Albert Gallatin.
Shea and Jordan Bogucki will compete in the WPIAL Class AA Boys Individual Golf Championship at Youghiogheny Country Club on Wednesday. The low 16 scores advance to the PIAA Western Regional.
Soccer
Gabriella Lonzo’s second goal of the night at 2:50 of the second half lifted Hempfield to a 2-1 Section 1-AAA victory Monday night at Connellsville.
The loss hurt the Lady Falcons’ playoff chances, slipping them to 2-5 in the section and 4-5 overall. Hempfield improves to 5-3 in the section and 6-4 overall.
Lonzo scored the first goal of the game at 17:51 of the first half. The Lady Falcons’ Angie Bloom tied the match at 6:06 from an Anna DeMarco assist.
Connellsville had 10 shots and several good scoring chances, including two by Allie Grimm in the final 10 minutes. One shot hit the crossbar and the other slid by the goal.
The Lady Spartans’ Sam Orie turned aside nine shots to preserve the victory. Connellsville’s Ally Ramsey made 10 saves.
Connellsville is back in action Wednesday on the road against section-leading — and undefeated — Norwin.
In other girls soccer action Monday night, Belle Vernon edged Ringgold (1-0), South Allegheny shut out Beth-Center (6-0), McGuffey blanked Brownsville (7-0), Geibel Catholic defeated Monessen (8-1), Waynesburg Central breezed past Uniontown (7-0), and Norwin blanked Albert Gallatin (11-0).
Volleyball
Albert Gallatin won the first two sets Monday night and then closed out the 3-1 non-section home victory by taking the fourth set against Jefferson-Morgan.
The Lady Colonials (1-9) took the first two sets, 25-21, 25-19, but the visiting Lady Rockets rallied to win the third set, 25-10. Albert Gallatin secured the victory by winning the fourth set, 25-20.
Liberty Embacher led Albert Gallatin with 16 kills, 14 digs and three aces. Shaylyn Galancy finished with a team-high 18 digs. Tyler Peebles totaled 23 assists, nine digs and four kills. Bailey Powell and Alex Kephart both had 12 digs.
The Lady Colonials host Laurel Highlands tonight.
College Volleyball
Washington & Jefferson swept past visiting Franciscan, 3-0, Monday night for its fifth non-conference win of the season.
The Presidents won the scores 25-14, 28-26, 25-17.
Connellsville graduate Allison Means led Washington & Jefferson (6-4) with 13 digs. She also had three service points.
