By Jacob Meyer managing Editor 2 min read

After starting 7-2 on the season and 3-1 in Presidents’ Athletic Conference play, the Waynesburg women’s tennis team had a disappointing loss to Washington & Jefferson Wednesday.

The Yellow Jackets won only one of nine matches, when senior Lauren Cowden defeated sophomore Kelly Capone 7-6, 6-1.

“I don’t know what to say,” said head coach Ron Christman. “It was pretty bad.”

Waynesburg won only three total singles sets in the contest, which includes the two from Cowden. The other came from senior Ellen Limback in her loss to junior Abigail Palmer 6-3, 5-7, 10-4.

In Waynesburg’s other four singles matches, no Yellow Jacket won more than four games.

Junior Rachel Klemash lost to junior Courtney Brennan 6-1, 6-2, while senior Alyssa Daniel lost to sophomore Grace McCarthy, 6-2, 6-2. Junior Emily McDonold lost to sophomore Kathryn Chase, 6-1, 6-1, and senior Madison DuBrock lost to sophomore Brianna Morrison, 6-2, 6-1.

In the doubles matches, the Presidents combined to defeat the Jackets 24-9.

The top doubles team of Klemash and Daniel lost to the Presidents’ doubles team of Brennan and McCarthy, 8-2. Second doubles McDonold and Limback lost 8-3, while DuBrock and junior Rachel Wilson both fell 8-4 in the pro set.

“[We need] to work on the fundamentals because that’s what broke down,” said Christman.

The Jackets will have five days to work on their fundamentals before they take on Grove City Tuesday at home. Match time is slated for 3:30 p.m.
