University to host speaker
Nev Schulman, host of MTV’s hit series “Catfish: The TV Show” will make a noon appearance Oct. 9 at Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, where he will share his experiences and perspective on self-esteem, online relationships, social media, and overall success. The television show explores the mystery and complexities of dating in a digital world. This popular show follows its host as he takes viewers inside the stories of young people as their online-only romantic relationships collide with first-time, real-life encounters.
The event will take place in the Community Center at Penn State Fayette. The public is invited to this free event, which will conclude with an opportunity to meet Schulman. To RSVP, call 724-430-4271.
Presentation announced
The California University of Pennsylvania Meteorology Club is welcoming Dr. P. Grady Dixon to campus at 11 a.m. Oct. 2 as part of the club’s Fall Colloquia Series. The presentation, which is about the science of tornadoes, will be held in Eberly Hall, Room 120, and is free and open to the public. Dixon is an expert in physical geography and meteorology, and is chair of the Department of Geosciences at Fort Hays State University, in Kansas. He has appeared on CNN and The Weather Channel.
Scholarship announced
California Area School District Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2015 Non-Traditional Scholarship. Scholarship candidates must be graduated from high school for at least five years or have obtained a GED more than five years prior. They must also be a graduate of California Area School District or have children registered within the district. They must have completed at least one semester or term in an accredited school of higher education or trade school, maintaining a 2.50 grade point average or higher. Financial need must also be demonstrated. Applicants must provide the CALSDF with the following documents by Jan. 15: resume (information relating to the requirements above); two letters of recommendation; current college/trade school transcript. Exhibition set
Waynesburg University’s Department of Fine Arts will hold a Senior Art Exhibition Oct. 6, through Oct. 24 in the Benedum Fine Arts Gallery. The exhibit will display the artwork of senior art major Laura Shawver. An opening reception will be held Monday, Oct. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is free, and the public is cordially invited to attend. Shawver’s exhibit will feature batik, ceramics, drawings, linoleum and woodblock prints, paintings and photography that she has created during her four years at Waynesburg University.
