California hosts first cross country meet

California, a first-year cross country program, hosted its first Section 3-AA meet Tuesday afternoon, scoring against Brownsville, West Greene and Avella.

The Trojans lost to Brownsville (16-45) and defeated West Greene (15-50) and Avella (25-30). The Waynesburg Central boys edged Brownsville (25-32) and shut out Avella (15-50). The Falcons also shut out Avella.

Only California and Brownsville had enough girls to score with the Lady Falcons winning, 15-47. The remaining scores were 15-50.

Waynesburg’s Ben Bumgarner finished first in the inaugural boys race on California’s course with a winning time of 18:39. Brownsville’s Ricky Brown was second in 19:04. Mario Tiberie was the top finisher for the Trojans with a time of 22:46.

The Lady Falcons’ Kara Rohlf won the girls race in 22:30, leading a 1-2-3 sweep for Brownsville.

The California boys are now 4-4 in the section and 4-5 overall. The Lady Trojans improve to 6-2 in the section and 6-3 overall. California closes the regular season next Tuesday at McGuffey.
