By Kristen Brown for The 3 min read

The Southeastern Greene School Board Monday night recognized president Joseph Spiker for 25 years of service.

During that time, Spiker has served on many committees and has held the office of board president several times, according to board member Janet Pennington.

Spiker graduated from California State College with a bachelor’s degree in science. He began teaching at Mapletown High School where he taught for three years under a federally funded program, Pennington said.

“The funds were cut, and then Mr. Spiker was employed at Duquesne Light and in the mining industry at the Emerald Mine for several years,” Pennington said.

Spiker continued his pursuit of education and earned a master’s of business administration degree from Waynesburg University. At West Virginia University, he received a master’s degree in safety studies. He is currently enrolled in the doctoral program at West Virginia University where he is writing his thesis. He currently works as a mining safety instructor for West Virginia University.

“Mr. Spiker has dedicated himself to the Southeastern Greene School District both by serving as a board member and volunteering as a coach,” Pennington said. “He volunteered as the girls’ varsity basketball coach for several years and has volunteered his time with the Mapletown varsity football team.”

Pennington said the school board and administration thanked Spiker for the many hours he has served on the school board.

“Twenty-five years as a board member is a great accomplishment,” Pennington said. “The time and commitment to holding a position for this long is rather mind boggling. We honor his dedication to the citizens and students of our school district.”

Board member Gary Moser said Spiker has faced many complex challenges during his tenure.

“He has been a very strong advocate for improvements in education,” Moser said.

Spiker thanked school board members and administrators for recognizing him.

“The school directors that I have served with over the years are very concerned about the betterment of education,” Moser said. “Children play an important role in the process because they are our future. I want to thank the excellent school board that we have now. We work together and get things done.”

In other business, the school board approved the purchase of 25 computers from GDC Inc. in the amount of $18,175 through the Co-Stars contract with the state.

The school board also agreed to purchase 11 Advanced Placement (AP) calculus books, 13 AP literature books, 70 Pearson environmental science books for 11th-grade students, 60 Pearson biology books for ninth-grade students and 11 AP history books at a total cost not to exceed $17,169.

In other news, the school board accepted the retirement resignations of teachers Donna Billetz and Dawn Hall, effective June 30.

The school board also announced that the district’s audit was approved with no discrepancies at the April meeting.
