Bobtown Elementary ready for first day of school

Southeastern Greene School District officials reported on Monday that Bobtown Elementary will open its doors in time for school on Thursday thanks to the timely completion of a renovation project.

This summer, the school underwent a heating, ventilation and air conditioning improvement project.

“It’s state-of-the-art,” said Business Manager Patrick Sweeney. “The entire school will be centrally air-conditioned, and it will be all new heating as well.”

Sweeney said the timely completion was made possible because the maintenance and custodial staff did all of the ceiling work. It also saved the district a significant amount of money, he said.

“What they did was phenomenal work,” Sweeney said.

Sweeney also reported that the concrete for the steps leading to the front entrance of Mapletown Jr.-Sr. High School should be poured Wednesday and ready for the first day of school Thursday.

In other business, the board discussed the state of the playground at Bobtown Elementary.

Sweeney said he is searching for a grant that could help the district completely replace the playground, which is 20 years old and has suffered some vandalism.

“It’s atrocious the way that playground gets destroyed,” Sweeney said.

Superintendent Rich Pekar said the goal would be to install pieces of playground equipment that are more open.

“We want to find equipment that is difficult to use inappropriately and difficult to destroy,” Pekar said.

Also Monday, the board:

n Renewed the supplemental staffing agreement between Interim Healthcare and the district for the 2015-16 school year.

n Approved the service agreement between the Greene County Human Service Drug and Alcohol Program and the district for the 2015-16 school year. This agreement will enable a drug and alcohol prevention specialist to present drug and alcohol prevention curriculum and assist in developing and presenting Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) initiatives.

n Approved George Messich as the volunteer assistant athletic director.

n Added Breanna Otto to the professional substitute list.

n Accepted the resignation of special education teacher Dana Pacolay.
