On Saturdays, unless it is a prospective student day, the Stover Center is usually quiet. On Dec. 5, the building was quiet as it normally is, until 2 p.m.

At 2 p.m., students joined together in the Beehive for Craft Day.

The event lasted about 45 minutes and attracted 30 students who came to the event and decorated ornaments. After taking the top off a round Christmas tree ball ornament, the students poured different colors into the clear ornament and then shook the little bit of paint they poured inside around.

After the paint dried, there were many creative decorations, with unique colors, shapes and designs. While decorating, the attendees joined in casual conversation with friends.

The Student Activities Board (SAB), which hosted the event, paid for the supplies, while Laurie Steere led the ornament decorating.

Steere, who is the resident director of Burns and Ray Halls, works closely with students on a daily basis and having a “crafty” mind, decided to lead the event. Steere found the easy Christmas ornament decorating idea on YouTube and then worked with the SAB to set the event up.

Students with all different levels of artistic ability were able to complete the easy-to-do craft and create their own individual Christmas ornament.

Steere said that events such as Craft Day are a necessity in the holiday season because not only did the event help with creating decorations, but making the ornaments was also a way for students to get away from their typical day and use their artistic abilities.

“I firmly believe that doing arts and crafts can be a stress reliever,” said Steere. “When students have the pressure of classes, finals, maybe even going home, it is nice to set time a side to do something for the joy of it.”

Steere and the SAB received positive feedback.

“Overall, students expressed that they enjoyed the event,” said Steere.

The feedback that the SAB receives after events are one way the club works to improve and to know which events to hold in the future.

Steere said that she not only likes seeing the students enjoying events, but she also likes participating in them herself and interacting with the students.

“It was a great event and I am glad to have been able to host it,” said Steere.

Steere looks forward to future occasions around campus and interacting more with students.

The SAB hosted Christmas Bingo Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in the Beehive, followed by All-You-Can-Eat Pancakes for $3 in the Beehive at 10 p.m.
