Wrestling drops match to D-II school

By Jacob Meyer sports Editor 2 min read

The Waynesburg University wrestling team dropped a match at Division II Seton Hill Saturday 25-15. The Yellow Jackets won four on 10 matches on the day.

Head coach Ron Headlee said the team was disappointed, and he thinks the Jackets could have won the match.

“They were all disappointed; we weren’t on the same page,” Headlee said. “We could have won if we had everybody, but we didn’t have the full effort of everybody.”

Headlee mentioned a few of the wrestlers who didn’t perform as well as they have are redshirt sophomore 133-pounder Zach Swarrow and junior 141-pounder Filippo Crivelli.

“Zach’s been having some problems injury wise and it showed,” Headlee said. “Flip got off to a bad start, and those are two matches I think we could have won and needed to win to win the match.”

Sophomore 125-pounder Tristan Buxton put the Jackets ahead to start the match. Buxton defeated the Griffins’ Collin Dees 5-1.

The next five matches, though, went in the Griffins’ favor, as they led the match 22-3 after six matches. Those five matches included losses from Swarrow, Crivelli, sophomore 149-pounder DJ Grindle, freshman 157-pounder Nick Kusich and sophomore 165-pounder Landon Lohr.

The Jackets won three of the last four matches, to end the day winning four of 10 matches and losing overall 25-15.

The wins came from freshman 174-pounder Mike Millero, junior 184-pounder Ryan Shank and freshman heavyweight Jake Evans. Millero won 7-2 over Luke Shaffer, while Shank defeated Morris Lawson 5-2.

Evans pinned Alex Soutiere in 4:39, which was the only pin for the Jackets on the day.

“I was happy with Mike Millero,” Headlee said. “Jake Evans and Ryan Shank have been steady for us all year every time they go out on the matt.”

The Jackets will return to action on Dec. 29-30 when they travel to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in the Citrus Invitational.

“We are taking some time off for Christmas. We will be facing some of the best teams in the country [in Florida]. We want to see how we match up against everyone in this point of the season.”
