Students recognized for performance at regional competition
Students who placed in the SkillsUSA regional competition received their medals and were recognized Monday by members of the Fayette County Career and Technical Institute’s joint operating committee.
Several students received first-place awards in their areas of study and will move on to the state competition in Hershey.
“Our students did phenomenal,” said Lawrence Rossi, co-adviser for SkillsUSA at the FCCTI.
First-place winners are Ian Graft, technical computer application; Christine Buray, health professional portfolio; Tiffany Shuman, medical math; Greg Vansickle, electrical construction; Musheerah Tomlin, employment application process; Chelsea Young, extemporaneous speaking; and Alexis Campbell, job interview. In addition to the first place winners, Ben Holup and William Hutchinson will move on to the state competition. Holup and Hutchinson did not have any competitors in their respective areas of study.
The regional SkillsUSA competition is the first round in a three-level process. Students compete regionally, gold winners advance to a state competition in April and, if they achieve gold at the state level, the students advance to a national competition in the summer where students compete for scholarships.
Second- and third-place winners were also recognized on Monday. Second-place winners are Maria Jackson, Mark Malenock, Keremy Kelley, Anna Christopher, Ariel Harrell, Paris Hooper, Heidi Varano, Marissa Hart and Samantha Pugh. Mike McKinney and Hope Myers placed third.
Also Monday, committee President Ira Chrise asked those to remember former committee member Ed Andria, who recently died.
“He was certainly a friend and a force not only on this board, but at his school district and in the county as well,” Chrise said. “His wit and wisdom will be missed.”
In other business, the committee:
