Popular app helps students find ways to #ShowMeWU
Waynesburg University Snapchat users now have the chance to add something more to their photos with the new geofilter.
On Sept. 30, the geofilter became available for use for the students of Waynesburg University.
The filter wasn’t just for students and other users to have something new to enjoy; it is also used in an effort to help promote the university.
“Looking at other schools and other filters, a group of us thought it would be really cool to have for promotional use and for the school to have,” said Kyle Digiandomenico, an admissions counselor.
Digiandomenico had the original idea of using a Snapchat geofilter for promotional use.
“I think Snapchat is something students have really picked up on because it’s not a Facebook or Twitter. You get to show the world what your experiencing with pictures, and I think that’s more creative than using words,” said Digiandomenico.
Digiandomenico didn’t create the filter by himself, though, as he had help from sophomore electronic media major Shon Meade on the project.
“I had mentioned to Kyle how I was good with graphics and could help with the filter,” said Meade.
After creating a design, Meade took the final creation to Digiandomenico for approval.
“At first I wanted to make it the chapel, but we decided to keep it simple to start out so we went with Waynesburg University and Sting,” said Meade.
The filter goes along with #ShowMeWU, which is an effort from the admissions office to promote Waynesburg University through tweets and photos.
“I like that I can show off my school to my friends and let them know I’m at Waynesburg,” said Seth Kunkle, a sophomore exercise science major.
The filter has already made an impact on students expressing interest in Waynesburg.
“My friends back home have told me how they have started thinking of Waynesburg as an option for them because they see the name in the filter,” said Kunkle. “One of them is visiting the university soon because he saw the filter and wanted to come look at the school.”
In just a short amount of time, the filter has spread like wildfire back to students’ hometowns and has seemed to be an effective tool for the university.
This may not be the only filter students on campus see on their Snapchats.
“I think it would be really nice to create a couple more filters to create some variety,” said Digiandomenico. “Also [to] make some for special days that we have like sports announcing camp, mock crime scenes and visitation days.”
In the coming days, don’t be surprised to see more geofilters on the app in attempts to make Snapchat users aware of what is going on here at Waynesburg University.
